Property fraud is now the fastest-growing white-collar crime in Florida, with officials in Clay County warning that homeowners are at risk of losing their homes on paper without even knowing it. Criminals forge deed paperwork, file it in official county records, and then use the false ownership to sell the property or take out loans against it. Because documents only need to look legitimate at face value to be accepted, even experienced clerks may not spot the fraud until it’s too late.

This crime often targets homes that sit vacant for part of the year or properties listed for sale. Once filed, fraudulent deeds can be extremely difficult to reverse, leaving victims stuck in lengthy and expensive court proceedings. Florida homeowners are being urged to stay vigilant and act quickly if suspicious changes appear on property records.
